Mushemba to go on for one more year The 17th General Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) held July 10 to 14th, 2006 has deferred the election of the presiding Bishop and unanimously agreed to allow incumbent Bishop Dr. Samson Mushemba to remain in office for one more year. A press released issued by the Secretary General, Mr. Brighton Killewa, said the meeting held every four years has elected Mr. Exaud Ndulu to be the recording secretary for the next four years taking over from Mr. Seth Kitange. Bishop Mushemba has served in the same position since 1992 following the death of Bishop Dr. Sebastian Kolowa. During the meeting the Prime Minister Hon. Edward Lowassa (MP) officially inaugurated buildings of Faculty of Humanities at the Makumira University College (MUCo). Also during the meeting retired President Hon. Benjamin William Mkapa presented a paper on Economic Privitasation and the Contribution of Parastatal Organisation in the National Economy. Delegates received and deliberated on the four year Report by the Presiding Bishop presented by Bishop Mushemba while the Anglican Arch-Bishop in Tanzania Hon. Donald Mtetemela led a Bible Study based on the theme of the Assembly. Other papers presented included one on HIV/AIDS Control efforts in Tanzania by Dr. Amos Nyirenda from Nyakahanga District Designated Hospital in Karagwe Diocese and Hon. Dr. Lucy Nkya (MP) from Morogoro who talked about The Church and Children Living in Poor Conditions. The meeting is the highest decision making body of the ELCT its discussions dwelt on the life and work of the church as a whole. The theme of the assembly is from the Book of Nehemiah: "Come let us rebuild" (Nehemiah 2: 17-18).
