Malasusa installed as Presiding Bishop


Bishop Alex Gehaz Malasusa

Bishop Alex Malasusa was installed as Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) at a colorful ceremony held on November 11, 2007 and Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete graced the occasion.

The ceremony took place at Azania Front Cathedral in Dar es Salaam and was presided over by retired Bishop Dr. Samson Mushemba. He was assisted by bishops from the ELCT Dioceses, Europe, the United States and African countries.

Thousands of people from within the country and large delegations from partner organizations and sister churches from outside the country attended the installation ceremony that was broadcast live by the ELCT Eastern and Coastal Diocese Upendo Radio Station based in Dar es Salaam.

Also at the ceremony, Bishop Dr. Martin Shao of ELCT Northern Diocese took the opportunity on behalf of the Church leadership, to bid farewell to Bishop Mushemba who has served as presiding bishop of ELCT since 1992.

Bishop Malasusa was elected by the ELCT Assembly held on July 18, 2007 at Makumira, Arusha Region, to become the ELCT Presiding Bishop for the next four years.
