Press release No. 001/12/2010
Killewa
expresses confidence in Malasusa following his re-election
(Kiswahili)
The Secretary
General of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT), Mr. Brighton
Killewa, has congratulated Bishop Dr. Alex Malasusa for his re-election
to serve the Eastern and Coastal Diocese until his retirement saying that
the endorsement reflected the trust that all members of ELCT held in his
leadership.
Bishop Malasusa, who is also the Presiding Bishop of ELCT, was recently
re-elected by the 30th General Assembly of the Eastern and Coastal Diocese
of ELCT to continue to be the Bishop of his diocese.
The Constitution of the Diocese grants that, after a bishop is elected,
he serves the diocese for six years. After that, a general assembly may
either endorse him through a vote of confidence to serve until his retirement
or else replace him by vote of no confidence.
When the matter was put to a vote in the case of Bishop Malasusa, he got
96.6 percent of the votes cast at a meeting of 265 delegates.
The theme of the Assembly, held in Bagamoyo 5-8 December 2010, was: And
I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself
(John 12: 32).
On 29 November 2010 the ELCT Executive Committee, acting on behalf of
the Executive Council, issued a statement rejecting allegations in the
local press that were aimed at mudslinging Bishop Malasusa and undermining
his leadership.
Issued by the:
Secretary General's Office, ELCT.
